We are currently in escrow of a single family dwelling in Suffolk County, and the property has its own well / cesspool (as we preferred). We have basic knowledge on well water from internet research before commencing our shopping, and had similar but not exact experience on source of drinking water long time ago living in a rural / remote area in the Pacific NorthWest (rain catcher with water reservoir).

So my question, even better if you had properties and experienced with both water sources on Long Island, especially Brookhaven Township in Suffolk County (not in flood zone), to share with us your experience on the water source (good, bad and / or the ugly). Thanks

Well water=no water bill.
No power=no water.
You are responsible for all problems, like pump going bad, well running dry, etc…
May need some sort of filtration depending on water condition. Tastes and smells like pond water.

Municipal water=$$$
You are at the sole mercy of the company, just like electric. They charge, you pay, period. For the life of the home or yourself, whichever comes first. In the event of a power outage you will still have water.
Water is treated so in most circumstances you would only need minor filtration mostly for taste purposes. Tastes and smells like pool water.

Either way, I would not drink any of it. Comes from the same source. Well water is loaded with toxic chemicals. Municipal water removes toxic chemicals and replaces them with different toxic chemicals.

Do not drink the water.

what are you afraid of? Seems like, in your case, the damage has already been done.
