Just at a friend's in G.City. I got there by driving up rte 24, and left the same way. Every single corner has a 'no right on red' sign - not just the major intersections - but even the simple side streets. A no ROR from the side streets onto rte 24 is one thing, but off of 24 onto the side streets? Anyone know why?
On thanksgiving the shoulder is empty and you can see clear. On a weekday you cannot see anything making those turns when cars are parked on the shoulder. I assume that’s why but one can argue without the light you have to turn and you can’t see anything and that’s true also.
Go to a n s bagels and try and turn red without the light mid day on a weekday. It’s horrible over there and you’ll notice it.

I understand traffic might be intense, but why would it be a hazard to make a ROR here:
“ Under the direction of Governor Andrew Cuomo, DOT has changed its approach in addressing corridors with high accident rates,” Commissioner McDonald said. “In cooperation with our local, state and federal partners, we analyzed the entire Hempstead Turnpike corridor this spring and developed a plan for enhancing pedestrian safety at dozens of locations. With much of that Phase I work completed or under way, we’re moving forward on additional improvements that require planning, design and – for some locations – construction. These initiatives are being carefully tailored to Hempstead Turnpike to improve safety for all of its users.”
Since mid-March, NYSDOT has made a variety of pedestrian safety improvements on Hempstead Turnpike, including remarking 235 crosswalks and widening 126 of them, increasing pedestrian crossing times at 86 traffic signals, reprogramming dozens of crosswalks and adding new features to pedestrian crossing buttons.
The next round of pedestrian safety improvements on Hempstead Turnpike will include new crosswalks, traffic signal installations, modifications and timing changes, bus stop relocations and the installation of 13 raised medians at eight locations. “

Looks like it is School Rd. If memory serves, there is a turn arrow from westbound Hempstead Tpke to southbound School Rd, in addition to the sharp turn and obstructed vision for the eastbound traffic at the light.
Part of the purpose of so many streets barring turn on red could also be to discourage motorists from using side streets to cut through town from one main road to another.

Because if you're making a ROR you're looking to your left and you're quite likely to hit a pedestrian ....which are much more visible when there's no one on the shoulder, so they DID make sense.
No ROR is almost always evident in places with high pedestrian traffic (like NYC).
It can also occur when opposing traffic has a left turn arrow.
