Lol at comparing Mastic Beach and the Hamptons. God forbid the Mastics ever turned into another wannabe Hamptons filled with fake white progressives. Sorry I've been busy lately fishing fluke and striper. Clamming season about to start. The pandemic really changed all of our lives. For me I left the urban streetscapes behind to live like a bayman. Plus rocafeller05 had me banned.
To the OP, I love it here. As said above all I do is fish now. I either take my boat or my 4×4. It all depends where the bite is. People are friendly. Friendlier than what I am used to. No one has caused me any trouble on Neighborhood Rd. I don't go into the Reservation, but area around it seems fine to me. I go to Mastic Seafood weekly, which is great and not too far from the Reservation. The Mastics are considered one of the worst parts of Long Island, but then again we're talking Long Island. In general, as long as you do not conduct illegal activities, you should be fine.
I guess Mastic is OK, I've heard more bad things about Mastic Beach than compared to Mastic. Pretty much I guess the farther you are from the reservation the better I guess. Since you are only going to be there for a few weeks, I guess you should be fine though I don't know that much about the south shore hamlets/villages in the town of Brookhaven that well (mainly because they're boring) so I am not the best reference.

Patchogue is the most happening hamlet on Long Island, and it is on Brookhaven's south shore.
