I’ve heard it in conversation, asked of me and others. Usually once someone says where roughly in Nassau or Suffolk they live.

For example...

“Where do you live?”

“Dix Hills”

“Which high school did you go to? East or West?”

..and then depending on the answer it yields

“I know X who went to West/East”

“What made you move to Dix Hills” (if you went to high school elsewhere on LI or NYC)

Or if you didn’t go to school on LI...

“Oh”.

This exactly. And I agree it’s a weird question to ask but it’s happened to me a few times in similar conversations.

Default Nassau County's a Nice Place to Live

Born and raised in Nassau County on Long Island. I have entertained other states, other parts of this state and even live in NYC now. For me a Nassau County, Long Island preference would not be for family at all, but I think what many may generally find likeable (as mentioned by others) are the beaches, proximity to the city and the train to get there, suburban lifestyle and good schools for the most part. I think the people in Nassau are pretty nice too . Personally, I prefer a slightly more metropolitan area and not a suburban sprawl that is Long Island with very few exceptions. I've lived in the Hudson Valley and find that the parts closer to the city are not as nice as Long Island and the further North you go, your access to public transportation diminishes, not close to an area that might provide a healthy social life and/or you get into brutal winter weather territory. NJ with the tolls and the Turnpike may be unsavory for some, I know they are for me.

To add Westchester and Putnam, it used to be more expensive than Nassau in the suburban areas maybe it's still true to a certain extent, but I think historically that was also a Long Island draw. Even though we have the high end North Shore, parts of the South Shore and Southampton out east, there are still places in between to get a reasonably priced house in a nice area.
