Yes, I know it's a far fetched goal.
We rent. Our landlord is selling the house and we are wondering if we can get out of renting. I'm applying to Nursing programs, we will be living on 1 income, and 350K is what is comfortable for us to commit to. Not looking for a dream home at this point, just a decent school district. Where can we get the best bang for our few bucks?

That max mortgage calculated with common fees for apartments? Cause that’s what you should be looking for

There are homes out there for that price, but, it all depends...

Questions:
  1. How handy are you/do you want to be?
  2. Which school district do you consider "decent"? (personal preference comes into play here)
  3. What is the limit for RE taxes? (has an impact on your monthly payment - did you talk to a loan officer yet?)
  4. How many bedrooms/bathrooms do you need for now?
  5. Do you need a basement?
  6. Do you need a garage?

The answer(s) to those questions will help eliminate many (if not most) of what's out there...

We are handy, a fixer upper would be ok as long as it is "livable".
We are in Long Beach right now, looking for similar SD
We are accounting 10K for taxes (yes, spoke with loan officer)
No need of basement
2 bedrooms/ 1 bath would be ok, 3 bedrooms would be awesome
Garage not necessary

A house would be our 1st choice, if we can't find one, then we will look for an apartment.

Maybe Elmont. Maybe. If I were you, I’d look at garden apartments in Eastern Queens in SD 26. It’s a nice place to live.

Edit: Island Park perhaps? Baldwin? Valley Stream prices have creeped up quite a bit, but a fixer upper is doable maybe, too. Taxes on a house like that would be under 10k in all these places.

Baldwin is great & would be my pick! Lots of diversity too.

Thanks for the insight, haven't looked at Queens. We moved to Nassau after getting broken into in College Pt on Christmas Day, right after my in-laws arrived from overseas for a visit, and their stuff was stolen along with basically everything of value we had. The areas we could afford in Island Pk are the ones that flood when it rains...
