Can any Long Island dwellers point me in the right direction of where to live out there? Let me give you a little taste of what I'm looking for....A 2 family in a decent neighborhood with a nice diverse soup mix. I'm black and I don't want to live in a predominately black or white area. It has to be fairly close to transportation into NYC where I toil for 8 hours a day. I'm looking for a little space to stretch my legs in the back yard and an area where I don't have to worry about falling asleep on my back porch and being shocked awake by mortar fire. My budget is only $400k so I know I can't live in a palace but anything you can point me to that's along the lines of what I described above would be appreciated.
Valley Stream would work for most of what you're saying, although you won't find a 2-family for that price. Maybe Franklin Square? (Although I don't know about the diversity aspect of that area).
LI neighborhoods, for the most part, are pretty segregated, so it might be difficult to find the "diverse soup mix" you're looking for.
LI doesn't have two families generally speaking. And 400K isn't going to go very far.
This isn't true in every part of LI. For example, in OP's price range alone, there's something like 80 multi-family listings on MLSLI right now. (Not nearly as many as there are single-family homes, of course, and the area selection is somewhat limited, but I think your post significantly overstates the situation.)
if you bump your price range up a bit, Westbury. If you save up a bit longer, Mineola and Albertson would be great. Do you have kids, how important is the school district? I haven't found LI to be diverse at all...there are pockets of ethnicities and races here but I wouldn't call that diversity.
This all assumes that the $400K is all he wants to spend to buy a house. Is it possible he has that much to put down on a house? That would be a different set of possibilities altogether.

He clearly stated "my budget is only $400K" in the OP. I don't really see how that statement is open to alternative interpretations.
Would you discount Westchester? There are towns up here that are a fit for you too, like Ossining.
