Hi, I am not familiar with the area, but I am thinking of taking a job at the Computer Associates head office in Islandia. Can someone tell me is that reachable my public transportation? What areas for housing should I look for when I don't have a car (I try to add the car in the budget) that is accesible to main things like supermarkets, banks, or a mall to find the basic needs and easy access to CA? What would a single person need to make to live ok there? What are the areas around it or do people live in Islandia or is that a commercial area with offices and headquarters. I tried to search info on this place but maybe it's a small town or something, not a lot of info is provided online for it. thanks you so much.
Islandia, like most of Long Island is really made for the automobile. I think you would be lost without one. Think of an archtypical suburban area and you would be close to the reality of Islandia. As far as cost of living, it is quite high here and you really must factor in automobile expenses in order to be realistic as far as costs. You may try to Google Suffolk Bus to acertain what bus service is available.
Thanks boomvang. I figured so. I was trying to avoid but I have lived in the MD before without a car it was hard but doable. I was close to things that i needed to get to but tricky to get to school. Yes worst case I would need to get a car. Any suggestions for towns or places I could look into for housing close to CA and close to places for basic needs? I was on craigslist but not sure which towns or places i should look into. If you know anything just let me know, or anyone any suggestions, feel free. I know nothing about the area. thanks.
Hauppauge is a good place to start. Smithtown is also good. Ronkonkoma is probably better and less $$.
But you will need a car ; the public transportation here is terrible.
Generally, the South Shore is less costly then the North, with center Island the most affordable. We live in the hamlet of Islip on the south shore which has a nice small town feel. Great River is not bad, but lacks a true downtown. Patchogue is larger, more diverse and possibly more affordable. Ronkonkoma is another possibility and is closer to Islandia. Smithtown is a very large town with varied housing types and costs. How far do you feel like driving every day? Carpooling is another possibility with a large firm like CA. Rush hour can be a bear here.

The company has not looked too secure lately. Lots of problems with mismanagement especially with possible stock manipulation (see Sanjay Kumar). Look long and hard before jumping in.
