Have you considered Freeport? It's on the South Shore, 40 minutes from NYC, 10-15 minutes from Jones Beach. It also has a great waterfront area, a large and excellent public library and they are working to revitalize the downtown area. It is one of the most diverse suburban communities on LI...1/3 White, 1/3 African-American & 1/3 Hispanic. It also has much lower property taxes than most of Nassau County and its own utilities. The residential areas are lovely...many old houses, tree-lined streets and, on a whole, very well-maintained. Some NW neighborhoods rival Gold Coast North Shore towns for 1/2 the price and there are many small capes in the $300-400k price range.
Freeport has had a bad rap for years but is definitely on the upswing.
No, I'm not from the Chamber of Commerce! I was born in Freeport and raised in Merrick. Am now in the SF Bay Area, where no one would think twice about an interracial couple!
I think you could get alot for your money in Freeport and not have to deal with the closed-minded people who have problems with anything that doesn't fit their definition of "normal."
Good luck!

NYMOM, you cant believe it?? really? have you checked the Hatewatch website for the growth of the Hate crimes in America? esp in NJ, PA, New York area?

check it out at www.splc.org

I live in CC Philadelphia with lots of diversity, wealth and education yet IR couples, gays, minorities get racial and ethnic attacks all the time. We just had a cross burning in our city last year on an Interracial Family lawn in middle class neighborhood.

The Wh Supremacist were driven from Idaho and they found fertile ground in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Kitty,

You should try Montclair NJ. It is rated the best place in the US for Interracial couples/families to live. It is probably as close to the city for work and such, as Huntington LI is and it is beautiful and you should be able to find something for that price.
