You do realize that more than 1 NHL star has refused contract offers from the Islanders and plays elsewhere for less money because of the decrepit, out of date Mausoleum. To field a competitive NHL team, the Islanders need a modern arena, end of story. The "idiot" running the team (who is probably wealthier than yourself), has had his hands tied by Nassau County for years and he is not the only one. Also, Joe Louis Arena has 86 luxury suites. The Mausoleum has less than a third of that.
The idiot IS more wealthy than me. Did you think I was an aerospace engineer?
HE CAN AFFORD TO BUILD IT HIMSELF. He tried. TOH didn't approve his idea. Doesn't matter why. They didn't. No need to get the county in a deeper hole, under the guise that it will keep the Islanders here, and target their fan base on such a monumental vote for ALL Nassau residents.
You need a competitive team to build an arena. Wang operates at a loss for 10 years and cries foul about what? The SMG albatross lease? He knew about that when he bought the team. Year in and year out the team has drafted high, traded picks away just when their entry level contracts expired (read: payday? there's the door), hired inexperienced "yes-men" coaches, signed retread free agents (Garry Galley...woo hoo order the rings!!!), and trusted Mike effin Milbury as a "smart hockey man".
The Ryan Smyths and Christian Ehroffs and Evgeni Nabokovs want nothing to do with this circus act; not because of the building; because they know as long as Wang runs the show, this team doesn't have a prayer.
Take a look at Pittsburgh if you need a frame of reference.
For once the Islanders look like a team on the rise, holding and develping picks, they could be on the cusp of something big, if only a decent vet or two would consider playing here...of course, when they see this idiot throwing huge contracts out there and completely handcuffing his front office's leverage and flexibility, then try to re-sign the POS whose contract they bought out 4 years ago (and are STILL PAYING), well, if the arena is holding FA's back, why should WE build an arena for this flailing franchise and moronic owner whose sole interest is Real Estate?
On August 1, 2011, voters in Nassau County rejected a proposal for a new arena to replace the Nassau Coliseum. The future of the Islanders in Nassau County is now uncertain.
I'll vote YES on a new Coliseum that uses public funding when Suffolk County votes YES for a Casino that uses public funding.
i was happy to vote NO considering the Islanders is the worse NHL team there is. If the Islander was a better team, then i would of happy voted yes. Overall, they don't deserve a newer stadium

They killed the thing that all arenas need something to thrive off of (something else around). The Lighthouse Project would have been great for the Islanders, the County and the Town, win all the way around, except Murray wanted nothing to do with it.
