And that should cost how much...??? Oh yeah, can't put a price on that, just like we can't put a price on a good education. Maybe, the GH district should be spending $5000 per year in taxes. Hell, there are lives at stake! Why stop at $5000. What's a good fire department worth, maybe $10,000 per year?
When neighouring fire districts are costing about $500-$600 a year, and have a bigger base and more people to serve, thats ok. But when you have a house next door to Gordon Heights fire district costing $2500 a year, then we have a problem.
It just is not financially sensible anymore to do this. Where I live, the development is served by two fire district. The beginning of the development is served by Yaphank, 8 houses in, is served by Gordon Heights. So those of us that are in the Gordon Heights fire district not only pay an average of $2000 more a year for the privilege, Yaphank fire district gets to a fire here quicker. Gordon Heights fire district also do not have a ladder truck, so again for the privilege of spending more money ( a LOT MORE), we need to get a ladder truck from a different but cheaper district.
The clock tower ; I bet you are NOT paying so much in your fire districts as we are. I still think that $34,000 is outrageous to spend on a clock tower. This is tax payers money!!!
I drove through Central Islip the other day going to the Ducks's game. They have a brand new gi-normous multi million dollar fire house across the street from the old one that is now vacant and wasn't exactly rinky-dink. I remember seeing the one in Medford a few years ago and that thing was absurd.
The dirty little secret is that there are more than 300 fire houses in Nassau County -- many of them palaces. And more aerial trucks than NYC has -- despite the fact that Nassau has one 24 story building. Let's not forget that the volunteer fire service in Nassau has almost 10 times the number of heavy rescue trucks that NYC has -- with one tenth of its population. You really have to ask yourself why this is allowed to continue.

That much?! Geez... no wonder there's such a growing public backlash.
You know, I appreciate those fellas and what they do, I truly do. Some are my neighbors, some were my childhood friend's Dads, some were just the other Dads on the block where I grew up. But I'd have to agree that they seem to have an overabundance of 'toys'. Last summer, a couple of teens were crabbing off the local docks, one slipped and fell in. No less than 3 separate rescue trucks responded... no, they more accurately raced to the scene for bragging rights. C'mon, he wasn't even hurt, they just had to fish him out.
The booming economic times that overlooked such excess is over. Even Donald Trump is downsizing his latte.
Yes, and their complete refusal to meet with the appropriate people is just horrendous. They have rescheduled a scheduled meeting no less than three times. Why? I dont know why, but surely three times is a little much.
We are just fed up with the blatant needless spending that is being shoved in our face. Many of the volunteers are not living in the district so it dosnt matter to them ; its just a slush fund that they are trying to clear out.
