AHOY Mateys...!!!

My neighbor has been out of work for the past 18 months and he has offered to sell me his 50 ft. pontoon boat which is moored in a live-aboard slip on Lake Mead. He's 6 month's in arrears on his rent and needs cash desperately. I was thinking about offering him $5K. The boat has a dock/shore tie for electricity and fresh water, dig. sat. dish and excellent cellular coverage (allegedly).

Anybody ever considered this type of living? The one thing that worries me is the wind since the boat has a tall profile (large sail area). Might be tough to dock...

Looking for a little advise so... let the Gilligan's Island jokes begin!

What is the monthly rent on the dock? How much past due?

Never heard of a pontoon boat having sails. There are tons of house boats out there that don't have a problem with the wind. If he is that far back on his rent I'm sure he hasn't been spending much on up keeping his boat. B.o.a.t used to stand for Bring Out Another Thousand but now a days it's more like Bring Out Another Ten Thousand. Who knows you could be getting a great deal or could be buying a hundred grand worth of headaches.

Deal is far to good to be true. Presuming it is actually a liveaboard with full systems including AC generator and propulsion.

Tie up well and sail area is not a big deal.

Does not compute.

DO IT!!!

Living on a boat has always been a dream of mine... However, don't get caught up on what a good deal it is right now, because it won't be cheap to maintain.

There's a reason for the saying "If it flies, FLOATS, or f**Ks....rent it".

The maintenance list for a boat just about endless. Corrosion, mold, weather, batteries, fuel.... Just something to think about before you make the plunge. Do some research to make sure you know what you're getting into.

I've never heard of anyone living on Lake Mead. Are you sure that's legal? It is a National Recreation Area.

Does the sewage just "float away" or just collect there right under you at the dock? Ewww.

The best day in a boat owners life is the day he buys the boat and the day he sells it.

How are you gonna live on a pontoon boat?
It's not a houseboat.
TYPICAL 'HOUSEBOAT'

TYPICAL PONTOON BOAT

No, it's a houseboat, I looked at photos of it.

Anyways, I just pulled my twin 80's (scuba tanks) out of the closet and was going to take them and get air but they're out of hydro (been more than 5 years since I used them last). I need to do a hull inspection before I commit.

I love the idea. I considered doing the same thing in Santa Barbara. My in-laws live in an RV. Not much difference. Good luck, Event too long of a name to remember.
