Knoxville is a middle-ish sized city, and has pretty much all the same good and bad stuff as most mid-size cities in the U.S.
When I moved from California to a job in Auburn, Alabama in the late 1990s for a few years, I heard every stereotype about the southeastern US you can think of before my move from people who had never lived in or hardly visited the southeastern US. The stereotypes were mostly related to movies like Deliverance, My Cousin Vinnie or Mississippi Burning. These impressions are still common here on CD too!

Exactly. People who've never been to a place acting like they know all about it. I take this sort of advice in the same way as someone who's never been to France trying to tell me all about French people. The opinions aren't worth the breath it takes to speak them.

Please, come to Tennessee. Form your own opinion, and do not worry about snakes. Honestly, snakes (and most wildlife) aren't into confrontations. They will back away if you give them a chance to. If you see one in your yard and it's bothersome to you to have it there, just spray it with the hose. It will go away if you give it the room to do so.

I personally like the fact that the king snakes in my yard were eating the pesky voles which were eating my iris and lily bulbs.

Knoxville is having it's city share of crime. When you are here, watch the local news on TV and subscribe online to the Knox News Sentinel.
