I'm making plans for a trip (for two) to the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area, for sometime between April and September. I've been to Kentucky before (twice), but never this part of the state. I'm thinking about staying in a cabin. I saw some online which look awesome. I will be driving there from St Louis.
Are there any tips which might make our visit more pleasant? Are there certain busy times of the year when it's difficult to reserve lodging? What months of the year does this area have the best weather? And, besides Dollywood, what are some other fun and interesting things to do in the area?

The best tip I might be able to offer is to buy a map before you go. Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge is in Tennessee, at least 100 miles from the southern border of KY. It won't be much fun if you are driving around the wrong state

If you want to break the drive up a little bit, you could stop in Nashville for a day. Gatlinburg is a beautiful area, although quite touristy and congested many times during the year, particularly during the fall when all the leaves are changing colors. If you're into hiking at all, you might drive down to the Appalachian trail and head out to Clingman's Dome. The cabins in the area are nice and definitely worth it.

The best time to go in my opinion is either June or September.

Make it early October when the leaves are changing. One of their biggest tourist times.
And from St. Louis, just follow I-64, to I-57, to I-24, to I-40 which will take you to the road going to Gatlinburg.
But I think Missing Indiana has the right idea with stopping in Nashville. Of course you could spend several days there and not see everything.

I like June or September cause it isn't busy, cabins are cheap and you can still see bears.

Dont' worry about it, the states are very similar, especially on the eastern side of each state. The only thing almost as beautiful as the hills of Kentucky are the hills of Tennessee to me.

This is the cabin where we stayed. We have been several times, but this one had to most GORGEOUS view ever!!! I highly recommend (and no... I'm not being paid to say this).
