So, I am nearly 70 years old. I live in Colorado on a mountain in the mountains. I absolutely love living here but since we have to climb 47 steps to get to our front door and have some pretty severe health problems we are strongly considering moving.

My son met a nice lady with 2 kids online about a year ago. They finally met and fell in love and he has recently [very recently, closing was the end of October] bought a beautiful home in Prestonsburg. He,and his new wife, have been urging us to sell our very humble home and trade it in for something comparable in Prestonsburg.

It looks beautiful and if we lived nearby he wouldn't "worry about us" so much. I have other family members in Colorado but I can't BEGIN to afford anything anywhere else in Colorado.

What I wanted to know is if an old woman like me would have much of a chance of making new friends there? And also if it is hard to find a neighborhood where I could have my chickens and my nigerian dwarf goats.

I have a developmentally disabled son [ one of the reasons my son wants us to move there, for when my husband and I are both passed there will be someone to care for him] who might be getting surgery that might help him to eventually be able to work as a dishwasher or something like that on a part-time basis. If the surgery is as effective as we hope would there be mch of a chance for him to find some type of minimum wage job?

If we moved there and I made a bunch of plates of cookies and brought them to my new neighbors would that be a step iin the right direction as far as fitting in?

I'm not sure what to do. I already have bone loss density because of chemotherapy treatments, so all those steps are now just an accident waiting to happen.

Okay, last, and most important, my husband does not want to move. We live in our little cabin in the mountains and he never wants to leave it. I don't either but don't see much of a choice. Can anyone please tell me some wonderful things about Kentucky that might convince him to want to move there.?

Thank you, Vicky

It's such an individual thing. I know nothing about Prestonburg other than it being a small town in Eastern KY and towns, counties, east and west, north and south can vary considerably in some ways. Most people everywhere are generally very friendly and accepting, at least that's been my observation.

I retired back in June and moved to Maysville which is the edge of the Bluegrass and Appalachia on the Ohio River. My neighbors have been great and I've met many very nice people and made some new friends. One family I met even invited me to go along with them and their 5 little kids to see Christmans lights and have dinner with them. It was a lot of fun. I love it here and have no regrets.

This is just my personal thought but if I had a spouse who was dead set against moving, forcing a move might be a regretful thing to do.

My wife and I watched videos of "Country Boys" a depressing, 6-hour documentary film series set in 2006 in a school in Prestonsburg and the community there.

This is also interesting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestonsburg,_Kentucky

My husband helped my son move his belongings to Kentucky 3 weeks ago and now agrees that we should probably move there. We will be visiting in the smmer to see if we can handle the hot, humid summers.
