I was watching news out of Lexington this morning (live in Maysville) about the 2020 census. Counties around Lexington had the highest growth rate in the state with Scott County leading the way at 21.2 percent. Counties around Louisville also had substantial growth.
Some Appalachian counties had significant population declines. Roberston County was the least populated with a little over 2000 people in the entire county. I would have thought a county deep in Appalachia would have been the least populated.

Do any of these results surprise anyone?

Robertson county is also the smallest county (land-mass wise)in KY. I have driven around and thought it several times looking for property, there is very little there - people, buildings or anything else to actually cause someone to go there....

The population loses in W KY are creeping eastward, once being relegated to the MS River counties. Last decade even Henderson and Christian counties lost population. Just across the border Clarksville TN's county grew 25%. Bowling Green / Warren Co and now Simpson Co are having rapid population growth that is directly tied to Nashville. Warren Co nearly added as many numeric residents as Fayette Co which is crazy. Louisville just holding between boom and bust thanks to the 3rd fastest percent growth in foreign born population of any metro area.

Basically 99% of counties in Appalachia north of Knoxville TN all the way to Maine lost population.

You can definitely see the impacts of that increase due to rising rent. Warren County, KY and Sumner County, TN are bursting at the seems. The traffic on US 231 (Scottsville RD) in Bowling Green rivals Clarksville and even the Rivergate Mall area in North Nashville/Goodlettsville.

Bowling Green rent in the early 2010s you could fit a pretty good place to rent for only $600 and now $900-$1,000 is the base for rent.

Western KY outside of Bowling Green and some LBL counties due to retirement are really struggling due to rural America issues. Urbanization, loss of jobs, poverty/drug issues, and the shedding of young/more liberal/non-Christian crowd.

An interesting note,

The county with the largest population decline in the entire country is Alexander County, IL right across the Ohio River from Ballard County.

Granted that county has even more issues than just typical urbanization/loss of jobs.

Paducah, for example, is more urban than some of Kentucky's metropolitan counties. They once had a cable car network for pete's sake! There are others too. Hopkinsville, Henderson, Owensboro, Murray...

The population losses in NW TN from Dyersburg to Paris to Memphis mirror that of W Kentucky. There is a concern where rural areas were undercounted due to Covid problems. Also lost may be any colleges where the students were sent home.

Clarksville is also growing with new warehouse & industrial developments with rail connection + access to I-24.

Wow.
Lexington now has a higher population than Cincinnati or St Louis.
