I recall that a couple of years ago, a request to the FCC, accompanied with an excellent argument, much proof of necessity, and many community responses, was made to get WYMT-57 in Hazard added to the Dish and DirecTV lineups both for the Lexington market and for "orphan counties" in out-of-state DMAs in Eastern Kentucky (Knoxville, Tri-Cities, and Charleston-Huntington). You now have the anomalous situation of a large portion of Eastern and Southern Kentucky not able to get their local news and weather on satellite, because the providers refuse to carry two CBS affiliates within the Lexington DMA, and not having WYMT via satellite, they can't make it available to viewers in the orphan counties. The area stretches from roughly Elliott and Lawrence counties in the north, to Harlan, Bell, and McCreary counties in the south, pretty much everything south of I-64 and east of I-77 that is outside of a 30-40 mile radius of Lexington.
As a native of Eastern Kentucky, though I've been away for decades now, I have immense respect for WYMT and their unique role in bringing Eastern Kentucky together, and I think the people of that region deserve better.
I meant to say "deserve better" than being denied WYMT on satellite, not "deserve better" than WYMT itself. I re-read what I wrote, and you could read it either way. WYMT does an outstanding job at what they do, and they are an incredibly valuable resource to Eastern Kentucky. I was watching them just last night on VUit and was very impressed.
