I noticed today that there were about 50 or so migrant workers scattered along US 641 in Marshall and Calloway County picking up trash along the median and sides of the highway. It is the same crew that mows that stretch in the summer. First off, why is the state paying people to pick up trash? That's what prisoners and local jail inmates are for. Second, the company that runs the operation is not even from the state of KY. They are from Indiana! I just think our money could be spent in better ways and if the state has to pay a company, at least pick one from within OUR STATE!!!

There's most likely a lot of people in that area that could use those jobs. Sometimes you just have to ask yuour self what your gov leader are thinking.

It's hard to get local mowing crews for mowing the right of way. When I worked for the highway dept. our foreman had to go try to recruit local farmers for mowing the right of way. The big problem is part of the contract says you might be mowing in Calloway County today, but we may call you tonight to tell you to pack up and move to some county in the center part of the state and start mowing in a couple days. Most crews don't have the man power or money to do that.
We had a tree trimming crew that does a lot of contract work for the state in our county for a few weeks. They were operating out of Virginia but the workers were from Central America. Out of the 6 men working there, only 1 spoke English. He said the company would tell them what date to be at the closest airport to where they live. this company would take care of all the paperwork for them to legally work in the U.S. These men weren't afraid to work.
I'm not taking up for them, but the state puts the contract out there and I guess the out of state bidders will underbid state businesses to get the job.
