Hi, so my husband has got order's to PCS to Fort Leavenworth. We are moving from Georgia. I have two children ages 7 and 1 both girls. We will be moving out there before him at the beginning of August. Can anyone tell me what there is to do around there..shopping, restuarants, parks..etc.. close by, it would be really appreciated.

I found this on the internet:

Leavenworth Convention and Visitor's Bureau

That should help with seeing what is around Leavenworth. Leavenworth is also fairly close to Kansas City where there is a lot more shopping and things to do. Topeka, the state capital, is to the west and there are some museums there and the capital to see.

Not sure about Ft Leavenworth itself. I don't think they have a lot there. Maybe a walmart? But it's only 15 minutes from major suburban retail, dinning, theaters etc in Platte County (Northland of KC) and Western KCK near the speedway area.

Ft Leavenworth and Lansing are suburbs of KC, even though Ft Leavenworth is somewhat independent with the military and prison operations. They are just sort of out there by themselves a bit.

If you don't want to live in that area, I would look into western wyandotte county in kansas or platte county in missouri although many don't have a choice anyway.

I lived there about 5 years ago when I was working as a nanny for a military family. There wasn't a lot in Leavenworth itself, just a Wal-mart, some chain restaurants and few interesting stores downtown. Drive 20-25 minutes south on K-7 (at least I think that's what road it was) and you get to a nice shopping area with lots of restaurants. There is or at least was a nice children's museum in Shawnee called Kalaiedoscope that is around that area as well. As far as parks, there is a really nice state park about 15 minutes from Leavenworth called Weston Bend, and there is also a working farm near there as well called Red Barn Farm. There is also Leavenworth Landing which is on the river, and has nice benches where you can sit and watch the water. It's also right near the train tracks, the little boy I was caring for when I lived there loved to go watch the trains go by. About 30 minutes south of Leavenworth is a place called Deanna Rose Farmstead which is a fun free place for kids with animals, and a playground. I really enjoyed living in the area, wasn't thrilled with Leavenworth itself, but there was plenty to do within a short drive. The area is beautiful as well with lots of hills and trees. I hope your move goes smoothly!

I'm sorry...the children's museum in Shawnee was called Wonderscope not Kaleidescope. Five years is a long time...
