I hope the moderator will allow the link below.

Jacksonville has so many unique homes hidden away like the Butterfly House in Arlington that was featured a few years back. The house in the link below is amazing and it must have been a sight to see in its glory days. It would be a monstrous undertaking to restore but if I had unlimited funds it would be great to bring it back if possible. I wonder where all the other treasures are hidden away?

I remember finding the Butterfly House for sale and dreamed of restoring it.

I've seen this house come across my Facebook feed several times. It's in such poor shape and appears to be sitting far too close to the ground, and positioned far too close to the Trout River. That area is prone to frequent flooding, too. It's a very unique structure for the area, though.

We were heading to Jacksonville early next week and I was going to try to sneak a peek down the driveway if I could. Checking the listing last night and it says contingent. It would be nice if it could be saved.

I've seen other structures in the region that are built in this style (Art Deco, I would call it), notably The Ship House here on St. Simons (now demolished, sadly) and the St. Simons Casino (also demolished). My mother grew up here in a house that was built in the same style, but later residents refashioned the place to look more 'traditional'.

I share your hope that this house can be saved...it's marvelous!

This listing for another cool Deco house in Jacksonville popped up in my mail, so I thought I would share it in this thread.

That’s beautiful, thanks for sharing. When we visited the first house that I started this thread about I noticed a few other similar houses and like the one you posted the link for. They were along the Trout River also. I had wondered if somehow they are related to each other.

The Osceola and Ortega neighborhoods along the river have such beautiful homes. I always loved riding through there on a lazy Saturday.

I'll go broader and assert that Jacksonville's intown neighborhoods are some of the loveliest in the country. It's an attribute that most people don't associate with the city, however, and that I find surprising.

We have been here quite a while and Jacksonville is so big land wise and there are so many neighborhoods we have yet to explore.

We had went to Duval Honda a few months back and they had a bad accident on Cassett Avenue so we took to the side streets and surprised to see so many nice brick house sprinkled throughout the neighborhood much like the ones in San Marco.

The houses that you encountered might be explained by some content included in the listing that I posted earlier:

Own this striking post-Art Deco concrete home built by King Soloman Rathel and his wife Marvel. This amazing couple arrived in Jacksonville in the 1920’s and during the Great Depression acquired lands along the Trout River to build this and nearly 15 other homes between 1935 and 1958.

As self-taught architects, this amazing couple incorporated rounded interior corners, stucco finished interior and exterior walls, concrete sill plates under the windows, curvilinear entry overhangs, flat roofs and signature drainpipe adornments that were all common design elements.

The Rathels sound like an interesting footnote to Jacksonville history. I'll have to investigate further.

EDIT: A-ha...
