That's right! Forty years, almost to-the-day, after Jackson's Great Easter Flood of '79 (an event which devastated much of 'Fashionable Northeast Jackson' - and during which, the very term 'Fashionable Northeast Jackson' came into being), Jacktown is faced with The Great Mother's Day Flood of '19. Jackson Jambalaya: Jackson Declares State of Emergency

In '79, developments within the floodplain of the Pearl River, caused runoff of floodwaters to move too slowly downstream (among other foreseeable and preventable factors). This time, we're not sure, yet. But having helped Rainbow Whole Foods Co-op recover financially, time after time, following floodwaters totally preventable by an inept city, I have a sneaking suspicion that this week's flooding is due to more of THE USUAL. And that seems to be the consensus among the studly stallion Kingfish's intrepid readers. Having skimmed-over the 'Proclamation', I particularly like this comment: Jackson Jambalaya: Jackson Declares State of Emergency :"WHEREAS it has been determined that, in fact, those collective moisture filled units in the upper atmosphere has relocated to a more detrimental situation, A.K.A. the sky has actually fallen."

And so, what better time than now, to listen to the lovely DeCastro Sisters singing Mañana - a song which totally captures the philosophy of Jackson's leadership of the last half-century: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Eem9DzHELM Love me some DeCastro Sisters. They had absolutely the best hair EVER: https://images.app.goo.gl/QNLxLfQ1dLdkwmECA

But have no fear. Dowager Soybean Empress says she saw on the news that they're giving away FREE SANDBAGS.

Oh, just a leisurely float down State Street, in a glass-bottomed garbage scow...

And there's so much to see, down there. First, there's the Sheriff's sexual harassment settlement:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dumFMA_2MBI

Oh, look, and there's ANOTHER school bus full of kids, stuck in ANOTHER sinkhole (happens with considerable regularity, in that city): Jackson Jambalaya: Bus in the Hole! I guess Jacksonians should be proud that JET AIRPLANES aren't getting stuck in potholes on the Jackson something-something-something (too long to remember https://images.app.goo.gl/KDTiGiKGjCNNXuRX7) International Airport's runways - yet. But at the rate things are going.... https://www.city-data.com/forum/55185911-post10.html

brickpatio's acutely insightful statement from that post, bears repeating, "There is a reason the airport CEO resigned on the day after the board's trip to Paris was approved by his board; obviously he was the only serious, law-abiding person in the room."

Let's take a side trip, and cruise up Old Canton Road, to the Country Club of Jackson, within which the former home of Lamar Adams, of Timber Ponzi Scheme fame, has just been sold: Jackson Jambalaya: SOLD! Surely, nobody really paid 540k for THAT: https://images.app.goo.gl/d1uAbcAZf1bcke9u9 But ya never know...

But back to the flooding, and my personal bone-to-pick with the city. Rainbow Whole Foods Co-op was one of the few world-class things about the metro. It was the nucleus around which the Fondren Community evolved, and served a true rainbow of races and "types" - from Fundamentalists to Hippies to Jackson-Kush-Plan enthusiasts to the wealthy Cognitive Elite of the metro. Everybody got along. It built mutual respect. The bulk bins were a mainstay, for gourmet cooks and elite professional restaurant chefs, alike (you'd see Jackson's top chefs stocking-up: the spices were THAT good). The spices were so fresh, and so cheap - as were the wide variety of whole grains and rolled grains.

Rainbow was a place where small growers (including local minority cooperatives) could sell their organic produce - and a wonderful place to find odd and local produce. You could buy award-winning olive oil - in bulk. And you could bring your own glass jugs, and fill them with triple-filtered-in-store water that was SOOOO good for drinking, and fantastic for baking - and it was CHEAP. Too, all sorts of otherwise-unemployable people, and people in crisis, were mentored as employees - leading to greatly-improved lives and productivity.

But after 20-some-odd floods - entirely preventable by a city which should have prioritized the fix, considering what a catalyst for positive change the Co-op was - Rainbow finally had to close its doors: https://www.clarionledger.com/story/...ars/777062002/

So truly, a "crisis", after a few inches of rain? I suppose the city's leaders are too busy with taxpayer-funded trips to Paris, and pressuring subordinates into erotic encounters, to worry about things like PLANNING, and RESERVE CAPACITY.

This is something Jackson has not realized yet. Even though there is a true CRISIS that has occurred.. is going to occur.. will keep occurring.. until SOMETHING is done... They just keep living life like all is OK.

Most folks when they get to the "crisis stage" they stop going on vacations, they stop eating out so much, they roll their sleeves up and get to work and try to fix the issue at hand. Not Jackson. They just allow business to keep going on as usual all while the problems keep getting worse and worse and multiplying. Just waiting on some magical federal grant (or something?!) to save the day.

It's the exact equivalent of people living paycheck-to-paycheck while spending $20 a week on lottery tickets because that's what's going to get this mess under control!
