With the rent prices, yeah you're right, they would be way more than previous rents for residents who lived there since it's a brand new building.
It appears three people are still missing. So they are likely in that rubble pile, unfortunately.

This collapse was clearly the result of botched repair work by the lowest bidder and allowed by corrupt building inspectors who just signed off on it all. This building should have been condemned. It's unbelievable that they could get away with this.

Yep and not even anchored to the pavement as the engineer's report dictated it it should be. Not that that would have done any good if the bracing was properly installed. The building was well past the point of anything saving it.

There needs to be a lot of criminal charges for this. I would start with the engineer, the contractor, the building inspector, and the landlord.

Here is the full unedited video right up to the point where the power cuts off. It's pretty surreal, people just walking through the parking lot as parts of the building start dropping off.
