I hadn't heard about this until today.

On the ground from 60miles north of Des Moines...rolling all the way over to destroy Comanche, IA and then continuing east until near Amboy, IL

1/2 mile wide upon impact with Comanche.

Very interesting. I love historical accounts like this. In 1860 these people had no warning that this was coming and I'm sure many did not have a safe place to hunker down.

I'm wondering if this is the same town as Camanche, Iowa today. Spelling either changed over the many years or it's a completely different town that was wiped off the map. I have a customer there, so the town spelling jumped out at me.

Update: I read some of the responses on the attachment and it is the same town.

Yeah, my bad for mistyping the name.

You didn't mistype it. The article has it spelled that way. My guess is that the town WAS spelled Comanche back in the day.

My hometown of Dell Rapids was originally Dells City.

Some interesting information on the 1860 Camanche tornado, including an article written shortly after the storm.
