Dogs and cat come up missing around the country for
a number of different reasons.

Dogs and Cats make great food if prepared right ( tastes like chicken )
and people from other countries come to the US to live,
and they will eat them.

Today there are many people out of work in America,
and they will kill and eat them.

There are Satanic groups who go around and steel Dogs and Cats for
different sacrificing rituals they do.

Today there are more and more coyotes packs, and they will kill
and eat Dogs and Cats in the country and suburbs.

if you propose passing laws to solve problems with missing dogs, start with leash laws; most communities in other states have them. We're definitely lacking in that area.

The sad thing is they will be out in the road again and may not be so lucky next time. There are many dangers about, like kids, dogs require a lot of supervision.
This is excellent advice.

That is total rubbish right out of the witch hunt era of the 1600s when people seen around a black cat (to name one) were accused of being WITCHES, tried and executed, people need to seriously grow up and get away from the fiction of Santa Clause, the tooth fairy and "satanic groups" who grab your cats and dogs for 'satanic' rituals.

The dog stealing is real and has nothing to do with owners neglecting dogs or letting them roam all over. The bunchers who buy from thieves sell by the pound to dealers who sell to labs and mills. Your best chance of your dog not dying a horrible death is to get him micro chipped. Dogs with chipped are often dumped and if you get lucky you might get him back. Furry Friends in WDM will chip a dog for $5.00.
Dog stealing is low priority for most rural sheriffs and some prefer to believe it does not exist. People need to call elected officials if law enforcement does not investigate dog theft. Ask longtime area residents who would steal dogs in your area if thefts are occurring. Don't be afraid to ask law enforcement if they know these individuals. Often they are well known for other crimes. A prime suspect in south central Iowa was a dog thief before going to prison for sexually abusing minors, served a few years and many believe went back to dog stealing in 2009-10.

This is why responsible dog owners keep their dog(s) indoors where they belong, once you put them outside, even in a fenced yard they are subjected to constant torment from flies, gnats, mosquitos, fleas, hot, cold, risk of kids throwing rocks at them, theft as well as escaping.

Iowa is the second worst state in the entire nation for puppy mills, 2nd only to Missouri. The Humane Society of the United States rates Iowa 5th worst for PROBLEM puppy mills. The creeps who run these mills will often steal intact dogs which are from popular pure breeds to add to their breeding stock. Spaying and neutering your animals will make them less attractive to thieves.

And, Iowans, don't buy dogs from pet stores, start watching for the puppy mills around you, and report them to the Humane Society.

Default Found: Southern Henry County (IA) Dog

We're in southern Henry County and had a stray show up at our house (Salem area) yesterday (12/23/2014).

Looks a bit like a Beagle mix, mostly black with brown legs and a brown face, little bit of white on his chest.

Took him to the vet and he doesn't have a chip. His guess is that he's roughly two years old. No collar, isn't fixed.

Called the local sheriff and the radio station but nobody has reported a lost dog.

PM me on here if you're missing a dog. As soon as I find a way to post a picture I'll add one.

We've got a couple of others so he can hang out here indefinitely without worry about going to a shelter and being put down...

...if nobody has come for him in a few weeks we're going to have him fixed and vaccinated.

Sculptor, dogs have a right to spend time outdoors and need to do so even more than people do. Many people live in the country so their big dogs can run on their land. Dog stealing is illegal. Period. It is a crime and large scale dog stealing for the purpose of selling the dogs is a criminal enterprise. Obviously illegal under State and local Codes. The focus should be on this. Not on rationalizing that the problem does not exist or only happens to neglected dogs or people who don't keep their dogs inside 24/7 like sedentary children. People can deter or mitigate theft of their dogs by keeping fences locked, by micro chipping g and dismaying the tag on the dog collar and above all by spay/neuter. These measures could result in a dog just being dumped alive far from home rather than sold for parts to labs or sold to puppy mills. It still does not protect them from being sold to be used for training fighting dogs. Too awful to contemplate? Yes, but this is the reality. Save your wrath for the thieves and your energ for paying attention to old vans and pick ups with toppers that slowly troll by your house and itinerant salespeople who come to your door and ask questions like "how many dogs do you have?"
