Dollar Tree is buying rival discount store Family Dollar in a cash-and-stock deal valued at about $8.5 billion. Dollar Tree CEO Bob Sasser says the deal will give Dollar Tree more than 13,000 stores in the US and Canada. That is nearly three times as many stores as Walmart, though the Waltons' behemoth still has greater square footage.

Family Dollar sold too many items that were not a dollar. It drove away their consumers.

The real question is how many stores will need to be closed due to overlapping territories. I cannot see the benefit to Dollar Tree. Family Dollar is a struggling chain that would not make it past the next recession. Could not Dollar Tree open stores in the markets that FD is currently serving.

I do give Dollar Tree credit as the store that has remained true to the dollar price. 99 Only has now added hundreds of products that are far higher.

Did not know that Family Dollar was struggling that badly. I agree that Dollar Tree kept to the dollar price and even bringing in more products.
