I got a message from the attorney general about unclaimed money through indianaunclaimed.gov. This is money in the custody of the state of Indiana from utility companies, the BMV, banks, etc. that can be claimed by the rightful owners. Almost every friend and client I've plugged into the site has had some property they can claim. My next door neighbor has over $100 from her mortgage lender and several of my employer's client have hundreds of dollars on there.

I had $130 in unclaimed money from house insurance and a house my ex-wife and I sold. I tried to get it, but they needed her signature and willingness to comply. It wasn't worth the $65 to approach her about it, so it will sit until it expires.

It's good the state does that though.

I occasionally visit Indianaunclaimed just for kicks. About 15 years ago, I discovered money held from a $125 insurance policy which my dad purchased before he left for Japan with his USMC unit during WWII. The policy was in his Polish given name. I was able to do some legwork and find enough of a paper trail to prove I was his heir, and the State sent me a check for $125. I split it with my two siblings. It was enough for dinner and a drink for each of us.

I have also found small amounts of money (the largest was about $250) for various friends over the years. It's easy to check names on the site, and kind of fun to snoop!
