I have a job offer from Vincennes IN to work at the hospital in town. I know nothing about the city. Looking at google maps and internet research I felt like there is not much to do at all there. I also saw that crime was high and no decent safe rental places.

Does any of you know what are some of the nicer areas in the region or other cities that are safer and nicer but commutable distance?
Thanks

Vincennes is Indiana's oldest city. Lots of things to do there.

Vincennes is a decaying city with a poor economy. True, it does have some nice historical elements, but is just another declining river town with constant threats of flooding multiple times a year, mediocre schools, and bad air quality.

I realize this is an older post, but in case others using this to research I will say a few things. Vincennes is ok, people-wise. The town is slowly dying though, and the 2 largest employers Are VU and GSH. (The University and the hospital). There is very little to do in this town. People go to Walmart to socialize, seriously. Despite having a junior college, we can't even keep a skating rink or a 24 hr diner. Since Covid, Walmart is no longer open 24hrs. There are a few annual events/festivals that are nice, but can be pricey. There are police everywhere, and if you are here any length if time you will get a ticket for something. Due to VU, the housing and rental market is ridiculous for a town of this caliber, and it costs more to get a hotel room here than in nearby towns that actually have something to do. I know a lot of people who work at the hospital, and they do seem to enjoy it. Basically, this town has no huge red flags, but doesn't have much to boast about either.

Red Skelton was born and raised in Vincennes.

John Mellencamp went to college there. And even though I know it's not the subject of the song, everytime I hear Mellencamp's "Small Town," or see the video, I think of Vincennes.

I spent some time in Vincennes over the last few years. I like the city. There are plenty of local shops, and many of the national chains as well. I agree with what a previous poster said about the police. They were always loitering outside the bars at closing time. If VU became a four year university versus just a two year university, I think that would be a big boon to the town. It is about an hour drive each from Terre Haute and Evansville. Whenever I drive through, I get this Bobby Bare song stuck in my head: https://youtu.be/9hiSpgHFzvc?feature=shared

I always liked Bobby Bare but he could have put more energy into that song so it doesn't come across as artificial as high fructose corn syrup. He was singing the words but you could tell he wasn't feeling them in his heart. Not a good look for Bobby Bare, Vincennes or country music. That song don't even fit his image. He's more of a rowdy, beer drinking boisterous type guy with a good sense of humor.
