I write about Sears House and I have a blog on this same topic.

Of the 370 designs that Sears offered (between 1908-1940), there was one Sears House that was the biggest, the best and the most grandiose: The Sears Magnolia.

And incredibly, you've got one in South Bend, Indiana!!

I have an old photo from 2003, but as you can see, it's a little blurry. I'd love to get an updated photo. If anyone here is nearby, I'd be profoundly grateful if they'd snap a photo and send it to me!

Thanks!

You may want to have a mod move this to the main Indiana forum. South Bend is not in Northwest Indiana. For most NW Indiana forum members it at least a hour or more away.

Neat house though, Sears homes are made out of good materials. Hope someone takes (or has taken) that nasty aluminum siding off of that one someday.

Thanks for the kind words, and you are right. Sears Homes (framing) were made from #1 southern yellow pine, right out of the old-growth forests in Louisiana and Mississippi. The exteriors were 100% cypress (the wood that never rots) from southern forests.

These houses were made with a quality of lumber that we will NEVER see again in this country.

I always *plead* with folks to SALVAGE lumber out of these early 20th Century homes (if they must be torn down) because they really were made of "the right stuff."

This AWESOME house is in the 300-block of North West Shore Drive.

I'd be so grateful for some high-quality, high-resolution photos.

Send me a PM and I'll send you my private email address!
