Hi everyone! We're planning on moving to Springfield this summer. We'll be scoping out the area (around 50 miles radius). Can any locals give me some tips, like what's a safer area to live in, that is not too expensive? We'll be putting our stuff in storage in Springfield and scope out the area sometime this month. A little about us, we currently live in NM but my husband was born in Chicago. The weather conditions in NM has not been kind to his health and he'd like to move back to the midwest. We have some money saved up so we can rent and look for jobs when we get there. Thanks in advance, guys!

Why Springfield? What health problems and why due to NM weather? Downstate IL is nothing like Chicago. Of all the downstate cities, I suggest Champaign, it has a lot more going for it than the others (Bloomington, Peoria, etc). IMO, the weather in IL sucks. Cost of living is high (property taxes especially). Health problems mean you need access to good healthcare. Living in rural areas outside of cites may be an issue.

Thanks for your input. I am scoping around peoria and champaign as well. My husband was born in chicago, so he is more used to the weather there. In NM, it's way too hot and dusty, he has developed more severe allergies, coughs a lot and suffered a few kidney stones and constipation so far. Had it not been for his job, we would've left earlier.

COL in Springfield is generally very low. Pace of life is a bit sleepy, but that's basically most of the Midwest. If you are looking for places in the city that are safe and nice, generally anything on the west side of the city, or the south side of the city near the lake. The north side of the city has beautiful, old, inexpensive homes but it's been stagnant for a while. Small suburbs like Sherman, Chatham, Rochester, etc. are all nice, have quick access to Springfield, and generally have good schools. Given how low the COL is in/around Springfield, there's really no great reason to live so far flung unless you want to be among farms and trees. Springfield is a pretty large hub for medicine, with two large hospitals, a medical district, and SIU School of Medicine. If you need additional treatment, WashU or Barnes in STL or a multitude of hospitals and specialists in Chicago can provide treatment, and they're not very far away.

Signs of dehydration. I live in Las Vegas, it took me a while to get used to the dry, dusty conditions. Drink LOTS of water.

Chicago is very different now than it was many years ago. The weather hasn't changed that much, but crime has. Taxes in IL were one reason I moved to a different state. It's expensive to move, make sure you do research before you choose a new place. Good luck!

If you are going to look at Springfield may look at Bloomington or Peoria. Depends what kind of work you are looking for.
