Hello! We are thinking about retiring to Sandwich, IL. Can anyone tell us about it? Is it a nice place to live? Is it affordable for two retirees with limited income? How far to hospitals etc.? Crime rate? Cost of living? We have bee hives so we will be looking for 2-3 acres outside of town. Any feedback is so welcome!

Taxes are a lot cheaper in LaSalle county, which Sandwich borders to the south, so look south and west of Sandwich for the cheapest cost of living. There's a hospital in town and a new-ish quick care medical center built in Plano off Route 34. I'm not really aware of any crime concerns down in that area, but the more rural you go the longer response times will be from the Sheriff's office. Other than a few small shops and restaurants, there's a Walmart in Plano, some bigger stores in Yorkville (Menards/Target) but lots of people go up to Aurora for more traditional suburban shopping/eating, as well as the Rush hospital.

If rural living appeals to you, with the convenience of the rest of civilization not being too far away, you could certainly be happy down there.

It's nearly in the top 10% of the state.
