This is going on all across the country and always have. Both parties engage in it and yes, there are very crooked reasons they do it.

When all the gerrymandering is completed before each election, my guess is that both parties essentially wash each other out.

If Illinois loses a congressional seat, I think that's a good thing for our country. One less rubber stamping, toeing the line, incapable of thinking for themselves, Democratic robot in Washington.

So after the loss of the congressional seat, do we flush or just let it stay clogged?

The loss of seats has in recent history adversely impacted the Illinois Republican Party more than the Democratic.

You're probably right since the Dems. have control. Immediately after losing the seat, LET THE GERRYMANDERING begin to assure that no Democrat seats are lost.

Are you implying that Republicans have done/would do anything differently?

What are the opinions of posters as to which seat should be eliminated or combined with another? There are currently 18 congressman from IL. 13 are Democrats and 5 are Republicans.
Mike Madigan's seat.

Unfortunately he is a state representative, and I use that word sardonically.

Yes, this.

Gerrymandering has been accepted practice for decades. Before the 1960s, Gerrymandering was mostly guesswork, but with computers it has become an art form.

The Democrats will twist the lines a bit more and it will be a Republican seat that's lost unless the Illinois State Supreme Court intervenes.

In Pennsylvania, it was the Republicans who twisted the lines into an 14-4 Republican majority. However, in PA the Supreme Court decided gerrymandering was illegal and the court drew its own lines. The new make up is 11-7.

In California between 1980 and 1982, the Democratic controlled state legislature turned a 22D-21R delegation into a 27D-18R delegation. Those lines had one district that jumped across San Francisco bay 3 times, and another which was connected by a long thin strip of uninhabited beach.

Republicans protested when it was done to them, which was mostly the case in the 70s and 80s. Now, it happens more often to Democrats and it is they who protest, but in these cases it attracts more media attention.
