There is strength in numbers. Increased public employee union membership = more political power = getting what they want. Will there be enough taxpayers to support them? Or existing taxpayers get squeezed even more?

Government jobs are more secure and many have fabulous benefits. Maybe this is good!
I'd feel worse if most were fast food minimum wage jobs. Oh wait, only 1/4 were government jobs. Maybe most of the rest were low paying low skilled.

And how do we pay for more government jobs and of course the resultant pensions later on? The population is declining, and growth of industry is slowing or stagnant in Illinois. So we have a state fiscally destroyed by too much government and too much government spending, causing residents to leave and the Democratics think we need more government and spending?

There is completely no context to this. First of all, they are referring to all government jobs, that includes federal government jobs. As of 11/18 13.8% of all Illinois payroll jobs is made up of government jobs (including federal jobs). Ten years ago, as of 11/08, 14.6% of all jobs in Illinois were government jobs. As of 11/18, total US government employment including federal jobs was 15.1% of total employment.

There is plenty of context
Quote:
Government jobs in Illinois outpaced manufacturing jobs in the most recent jobs report from the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Government jobs grew more than 14,800 over 12 months. Manufacturing grew by 12,800.

IDES said most of the new government jobs over the past 12 months, most were from local governments. There were 1,400 new state government jobs, but 1,100 fewer federal government jobs.

Across all sectors, Illinois gained 59,300 jobs over the last 12 months in Illinois. Government posts made up a quarter of that.

And Illinois still has less employed in government than it did 10 years ago and less than the US overall on a % basis. Not much context. The local government hiring likely has to do with having a state budget again. A lot of money flows from the state to local governments.

Not to mention that there's no mention of pay, which pension program these people are apart of, etc. It's also not uncommon for cash strapped offices, for example let's say a state's attorney office, to hire maybe two new lawyers at lower rates when a more senior person leaves. In many cases, they're paying less for the two new people than they were for the one more senior lawyer.

It's all relative.

It may surprise everyone, but IL lags the nation in percentage of workers in Govt, ignoring Federal employees. https://247wallst.com/special-report...government/10/
Of course, they are probably paid better than those in other States.
