Nevemind the health concerns for people that do use it. It's amazing that I can see ads telling us that "this can be the generation to end smoking [tobacco]", while we also see people that sing the praises of filterless marijuana cigarettes. Do you HONESTLY believe that inhaling marijuana cigarette smoke is better than tobacco? Or that it is without harmful effects?

Secondly, you are painting the state's fiscal issues too black and white. To get out of this fiscal hole, it will take a combination of BOTH tax increases AND spending cuts. Clearly, it won't work to simply raise taxes without reducing spending concurrently. Alternately, it won't work to simply hold taxes where they are while making up the difference entirely by spending reductions alone as you seem to suggest.
At some point the well will run dry. There is a limit to what we can tax people. I'm amazed at the amount of taxes I pay here compared to my previous state. It's mind-boggling. And for what? This state spends a HUGE amount more than it needs to.

My point is, let's at least be consistent. Why aren't you up in arms about alcohol use and it's worse effects if you are so adamantly opposed to marijuana? How are you going to keep your kids away from alcohol? The same way you would marijuana, education of its effects and parental guidance at home.

Also, you seem to be misinformed about the actual marijuana laws passed in states like Colorado. It's not like the stuff is going to show up (legally) in restaurants, schools, or public places.

Where am I allowed to consume retail marijuana?
Answer - Retail marijuana is intended for private, personal use. Such use is only legal in certain locations not open or accessible to the public. Marijuana may not be consumed openly or publicly.

1) You assume I love alcohol and have no issue with it. I despise what I have seen it do to families. I have family members that are alcoholics and their lives have been ruined by it.
2) It is legal. Not much we can do to change that. Just not going to happen.

But imagine when big tobacco starts producing marijuana cigarettes. Is that going to be GOOD? Or bad?

Not YET, anyway. Give it time. Let's be real.

I'm all for MJ legalization, but I don't believe it would do much to help Illinois financially. As mentioned, politicians will always find a way to squander new revenue streams.

Based on your previous comments, my impression is you haven't taken the time to understand the marijuana laws passed in other states but yet have formed an opinion that legalizing would be a big detriment to society. There are a number of things already allowed in society that are a much bigger threat to a child's well being in modern society than marijuana - alcohol, guns, social media, to name a few.

This is completely accurate. I typically vote Dem in Federal elections but know well enough that in Illinois, going red is the only way to save this place.

So your solution is to simply legalize it because there are things you consider worse?

I don’t share your fears about legalizing marijuana and while there are some definite negative consequences for users to be aware of (like any other consumed substance used in excess), it also comes with proven medical benefits.

Guess we will agree to disagree but I would encourage you to do more research on the topic before deciding the idea of legalization is a terrible policy decision and a huge detriment to society.

Per the tribune, 4 out of the 5 GOP lawmakers targeted for defeat by conservative talk show host Dan proft won the primaries. They also voted for the tax increase, knowing it's the only way for the state to pay its bills.

Two billionaires running. The first now has four years of on-the-job training but, judging from his record, is a slow learner. He can't finish a sentence without invoking Madigan. The other might get things done, but the wrong things. The only way it could be worse is if a neoNazi were running. Oh, wait. One is, in the 3rd Congressional District.
