I like to go night fishing, and I must say that the clear night sky in areas where there are no bright lights is just amazing. Can anyone recommend a good star chart?

What kind do you want?

If you have a decent printer, you can download SFA star charts from midnightkite.com and print them out. Or you can download monthly current star charts from skymaps.com.

If you just want to look at them on your computer, skyglobe is an old standby. I think there are better programs out now, but you'd have to look that up.

If you want a book, there are a couple of Golden Guides that have decent star charts. The one called Stars has pages and pages of star charts. The Sky Observer's Guide has a star chart in the back. It also has tons of information on planets, moons, and even meteor showers.

If you go fishing during the Perseid meteor shower, you should be able to see a lot of falling stars. Depending on the year. This year it should peak around August 12 or 13. It will be good viewing, since the new moon is August 10, but I'm not sure how many meteors there will be this year. It seems like there is a site that can predict pretty closely. I thought it was NASA, but I can't find it today.

Default "Heavens Above"

I also enjoy this website...
Heavens-Above Home Page
I enjoy watching for the International Space Station, click on the date that you want to look at, then choose "ground track" and it'll show you exactly where to look. (although with the ISS it's pretty easy to spot!)

Enjoy!

You can always go to Sky & Telescope.com. They have a decent one online that you can customize to your location.

Well, I want something I can take out with me at night and read in the dark. Maybe one of those ones that you can turn to see a map of the heavens through the months of the year.

Gives me something to think about with my phancy phone - Google Sky Maps. Grabs gps location, then turn it towards the sky and it tells me what I'm pointed at.
