Is certain county lines? A highway? A line of latitude?

An imaginary eastward extension of the Oregon-Washington state line?

This question was asked a long time ago.
I always thought NID started at New Meadows, but more folks who replied thought it starts at Lewiston.

The reason why I thought of New Meadows is because it's the point of no return. Once north of it, Lewiston and the panhandle is closer than Boise. Not in distance as much as in the time needed to travel.

New Meadows is due east from the Oregon border, and Lewiston lies very close to the Washington border.

Not a firm definition for sure, but I always thought HWY 12 along the Clearwater River as the dividing line.

Since we started spending a lot of time in NID, I always felt it begins just north of Riggins with the Pacific time zone, but I have to say that going up or down the Lewiston Grade does feel like entering/exiting a separate "realm." Maybe because "north" feels like "up"!

Yes!
Driving the Lewiston Grade is like making a grand entrance into a very different territory than the one below.
There's nothing transitional or subtle about it.

That could be the reason why Lewiston is so often thought to be the regional boundary. Good observation, CFF!

I use Lewiston as well. You drop off the end of the world on that grade. New Meadows I consider the "neutral zone" between the Federation up north and the Romulans in Boise.

Hey CFF, you getting any closer to being up there 100% of the time?

I've lived in the Coeur d'Alene area for over 40 years and always considered the five northern counties (Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai and Shoshone) as "North Idaho." This is the coverage area for Panhandle Health District as well as the North Idaho Building Contractors Assn. Looks like it may also be the boundary of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. A website northidaho.org includes just those five counties.

I don't believe there is a specific official definition of what constitutes North Idaho, so YMMV.

Steadalski gave a pretty sound reason for his definition.
Like everyone who's said so far, differences as to where the boundaries of NID exist is a matter of conjecture and more than a little dispute. But there's little seriousness in the dispute; all Idahoans are Idahoans, no matter where our homes are here.

If you want to include Clearwater and Idaho counties into yours, feel free to do so. Stadalski didn't. Opinions vary.
