If you were going to pick a small town in the Palouse region in which to live, which would you pick? I'm going to need to move closer to my brother in Spokane after retirement, but don't want to live in Spokane itself. I don't want to live north or directly east of Spokane because it seems to me the population of that area is growing too fast and there are too many cars on the roads. The Palouse is more my speed.

If I were to live on the Palouse, I'd live in Moscow. Mostly for the cultural activities associated with the university. Not the smallest town, but there is nothing outside it either. Kinda isolated.

(Just checked. 2010 census shows 23,800 souls living in Moscow. No idea how it has grown since.)

Another town you may consider, and one that shows up on a lot of "desirable town in which to retire" lists is Cheney. It's a few miles SW of Spokane, but separated by some farmland.

Cheney WA, Moscow ID are practical choices. But if you want smaller, consider Plummer ID, Rosalie WA, Tekoa WA, Colfax WA, Potlatch ID. Of these, Colfax is the biggest at maybe 3,000 people. Maybe St. Maries ID.

Moscow is about 25k population in city, 39k in county. Other metros (Pullman, Lewiston) fairly nearby. Perhaps a subdivision north of Moscow? Some in the foothills and probably in prairie.

First suggestion is to look north of Spokane. There is a some gorgeous territory just to the north with small towns and that will put you close to your brother to visit.

All the towns in The Palouse are small towns, and it wouldn't take you more than a day to drive around and look at all of them, and you really should not move to an area that you haven't looked at first..

My opinion is that The Palouse is a perfect area for a painter who specializes in bucolic rural scenes. Rolling hills full of farms. North of Spokane, you get some mountains and forest.

No offense to anyone for what I am about to write.

Moscow and Latah county would be and is my last choice of a place to live on the Palouse. This place (Moscow ID) is a boiling pot of feces (Marxist ideology) which is propelled by the idiot factory on the hill, otherwise known as Evergreen of the East or the University of Idaho. The City politics is liberal to the extreme with the college (professors) controlling the vote. They give the students bus rides to the polling centers. The out of state students then register on the spot with their new Moscow addresses and vote for whom ever the college tells them to. Then they are brought back to the college and they have a party.

We are one of the highest taxed city's in the state and one of the highest taxed county's too. But hey, we have 19 parks; oh yea, we are only 6 square miles, but we have 19 parks.

I have lived in Moscow for 7 years now and am only still here due to obligations. I will gladly leave this city government encouraged, mask shaming gulag full of sniveling cowards....No I will dance my way out of this BLM/ANTIFA supporting hell hole with it's communist art painted buildings....I just can't anymore, I can feel my Blood Pressure rising.

If you are a conservative with your antenna up to current politics, stay away. If you don't care or are liberal this is a splendid town. Be prepared to pay! Oh and don't forget your mask, the cops are on foot patrol in the city and will be writing warnings and citations.

There are other reasons not to live here. I just went with the most current.

I have had good experiences living here. It's not all bad, just mostly, and more so lately.

I'm with you Hudge. Today's education systems have been set up teaching Socialist ways for some time now. A friend of mine who is NOT a liberal living a Santa Cruz CA. having rental properties mentioned to me last time he cleaned up the mess several students left after they rented there he found papers written based on some books he found that were Marxist in nature. A neighbor's grandaughter who was visiting him the other week went off about Trump and the Republicans and she spouted off about the protests being so good and more. Yeah it's a sick sad world we're into these days and our country is fostering it sadly.

The areas North of Spokane are indeed quite nice and forest filled. That way if you needed medical or major shopping a long drive could get you what you needed. The Palouse is beautiful but it's not the best compromise. Indeed it's sad to hear of Moscow's ways so I'd stay far from there.

The Palouse is south of Spokane, not north.

Yes dcisive, north of CDA is where we are looking to eventually move, unless Benewah County can separate itself from congressional district 5 and the Moscow/Latah influence. I really like St. Maire's and that surrounding area.

I lived north of Spokane. Hated it.

It is cold, snowy and have they ever fixed 395?? County government was pretty bad.

The weather is so much nicer east of Cheny and around Lewiston. Depending on how close you want to be to Spokane I would look at Walla Walla.

I remember one business trip to Portland...chains from Colville to just west of Spokane. Took the chains off and had dry pavement all the way to Tri-Cities. Where it was 55 degrees.

We use to take summer mini-vacations in July and August to Tri-Cities just to get to some warm weather!!

Plenty of great places around Spokane....drive around in the dead of winter and summer.

I would NOT live east or north of Spokane just due to traffic.

Thanks for all the info, everybody! It's always good to get personal opinions. I've visited the area frequently when I visit my brother, so am somewhat familiar with how the Palouse area towns look, but no so much with what they're like for daily life.

Pullman/Moscow would be a very good fit for me, but housing prices are high there compared to where I live now so the sticker shock is a little too much for me. I'm assuming the smaller towns would be less expensive.

All I really need for daily life is an in-town grocery store and public library, and decent internet connectivity. Any small town that has those and a little bit of visual charm will be just fine.

Keep sharing your opinions if you have any, all.
