What is the weather like, generally, in the CDA area last two weeks of August? Never been in the region and am trying to figure out what to be prepared for.

Thanks in advance for opinions and information.

Not many "generally"s lately. Most of July was great. A couple days ago it was close to 100 and smoky. Today it is low 60s and rainy. End of month could be perfect 80s or like the previous sentence.

So, pack one of each piece of clothing. Thanks.

Are you going to any high elevations? 6000' is going to average 15-17 degrees cooler than 2000'.

As others have mentioned, it can be quite variable in late August. Generally, Coeur d'Alene and surrounding areas mirrors Spokane, but is usually slightly cooler. The same weather patterns that hit Spokane move west to east (usually) into NID.

With high pressure, expect 80's. With low pressure expect upper 60's to mid 70's, and a chance of rain. Looks like we are entering a low pressure system on Wednesday that may last for several days.

In North Idaho, we have four major mountain ranges or sub-ranges: Selkirks (Columbia), Purcells (Columbia), Cabinet (Rocky Mountains), Coeur d'Alene (Bitterroot) plus the Bitterroots themselves . These mountains give us our great lakes and rivers, as well as our mountain valleys. They are moderate forces for winter cold.

However, weather fronts get into these, and there is no telling what will happen hours before even armed with the latest weather technology. Gusts of 30-40mph will come out of no where. Forecasted drizzle turns into heavy downpours. At same time, forecasted rain turns into partly cloudy afternoons of great beauty. Ugly winter days turn out to lovely dumps of virgin powder.

So you prepare.

In August, throw in an extra pair of jeans, sweater, jacket, wool socks and boots. If off roading, throw in a few "what ifs." If you are asking the question in November, then you should be prepared for ANY thing or become a statistic.

My old man, a lifelong native, said Idaho has only two seaons: late fall and winter.

If you come ready for late fall, you'll be prepared. Winter doesn't start until September.
