Received my yearly appraisal from the county appraiser/tax collector in the mail this past Thursday. It shows an 18% increase from January 2018 to January 2019. Eighteen percent in one year? I don't think so. Need to head into the county appraiser's office tomorrow morning to file an appeal.

Based on a source I can't post publicly (because it is a "competitor"), the average home in that area has appreciated 19.5% in last 12 months. I am not vouching for that estimate but it is out there. It appears the property assessor is following that or a similar measure of market prices.

Even mine in my little town an hour and a half East of Boise went up about 12% so I guess we are all making some gains.

What area? Volsong can say if he wants. He has before.

How would they know? The source gets data from realtors and government / quasi government sources including FreddieMac. I am not sure of the exact answer here. They didn't say.

From the notice :"We have analyzed sales from the last calendar year (calendar year 2018) to establish assessments as of the statutory
January 1 st appraisal date. We have made every effort to reflect conservative value estimates for our statutory January 1 st
valuations. Our appraisal guidelines discourage us, and the Board of Equalization, from looking at current 2019
transactions until next year. Please understand that we are watching the market carefully, and the 2020 assessments will
reflect the outcome of this year’s activities. "

Does not say squat or provide any numbers.

Our Kootenai County home went up just 3 percent.
But the Spokane one went way up.

What can be done about this? We might not be able to stay in our home if prices keep going up.

I'm in Rathdrum. (And, thank you, NW Crow, for the source.) I'll have to sleep on it if I want to appeal or not. If it gets knocked down to 15% or even 12%, it won't make all that much difference in the yearly property tax bill. It was just a bit of a shock to me. Other properties in my neighborhood do not seemed to increase that much. Maybe they have. I'm not planning on selling or moving, so maybe I'm perturbed for nothing.

I bet you miss Prop. 13 in California a little now, don't you?
