I don't know if I'd call it rare, they are seen fairly frequently up at Priest Lake....but I'm too hemmed in by forest and moutains to get a really good glimpse of the wide open sky. So I see the pictures on Facebook and try not to feel envious.
I saw the northern lights by accident in Sept. 1983 in Sandpoint. My puppy woke me up about 2 am to go outside and relieve itself. I let him out in a daze and happened to look up to see this wall of light. It was a wall of vertical white lights, and looked like a rolling wall of lights that was always moving. I have wanted very much to see it again and my children to see it as well.
Great question! The Northern Lights are a bucket list of mine for sure! I lived in Anchorage, AK for three years as a kid and was not allowed to stay up late to see them and it's bugged me ever since. Would absolutely LOVE to see them.
Misty River: that is an amazing photo. Would be a life highlight to see it locally!
