Hi guys, I would like some advice about the areas around Twin Falls. My parents have retired and are about to buy a beautiful home in Buhl. They want us (my husband and 2 year old daughter) to relocate up there too, but I would like some advice on the areas around there. I have read many threads, some older from 2007-2009, about avoiding Jerome and some other areas, Buhl has mixed reviews... I guess what I'm asking is has anything changed in the past years? What areas would be the best for a young family in their mid-thirties, considering safety, good school districts, etc. We are planning a visit next week however we will only have 2 days too look around and I would love some advice on where to look or maybe avoid since we are short on time! I would love to get a home with some land, but close enough to the city. Where we live now is so congested and we have no backyard at all for our daughter to run around. Anyways any advice you could give would be very appreciated! Thank you in advance!

OK, some good questions there. First, nothing has really changed in the past few years.

Buhl is an iconic example of small town America. The key word is "small". There is no Wal-Mart, no McDonalds, no major banks (I think). Because it is within a half hour of Twin, there is no reason for those brands in Buhl. Don't get me wrong, Buhl is pretty cool. Nice mid-century, and earlier, homes. Just don't expect a whole lot of the stores you may be used to. If you were to move to this area, perhaps Twin would be a better bet, and still close to your family. From Lakewood, CA to Buhl would be a bit startling. Twin would be an easier transition, but even Twin vs. Lakewood is a major change.

Thank you for responding! Yes the homes are gorgeous in Buhl, and they are within our price range, but I was leaning more towards Twin also! (for the exact reasons you stated) Do you think we can find a nice size home with a little bit of land there under 325,000? I've heard Kimberly is nice, or from what I've read in these threads anyways! It looks like Kimberly is right on the outskirts of Twin...

Not as familiar with Kimberly as Buhl. Sorry.

Nice home with a bit of land near Twin under 325K? I would guess, yes. However you may have to hunt it down. I'm sure a local realtor could help you out, of course as a buyer, no cost to you.

Without knowing the area, I'd say you can absolutely do it. 2 minutes on Zillow, and I came up with this: 5 bedroom, close to 3 acres in Kimberly, $318,900:
3586 E 3900 N, Kimberly, ID 83341 MLS# 98489355 - Zillow

Just look around on Zillow and change the criteria on the left, and you'll see what's out there. It's even entertaining! Good luck.

I hate to say it but Twin Falls isn't what it appears to be on paper or on City-Data. I highly advise a trip there and spend a week or more in the city before you even think about making that move.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll be out that way in a few days... Can't wait to visit and see how it is! I've read so many different opinions about southern Idaho, especially from those who have moved there from Ca, I don't know what to think!

Boise or Pocatello are much nicer and only about 2 hours away each. You should check those areas out while you are in the area as well.

Since Christie was last here in 2013, she'll probably never answer your question.

Twin Falls has grown a lot since 2012, too. I think you would probably get more pertinent answers if you started a new topic about how life in Twin is nowadays.
