I have a few dead spots and the overall consensus was grub worms...

Should I get a spray application and treat the dead spots or treat the entire lawn with granules?

Any solid brands or products that won't break the bank? I don't want to buy the wrong one IE- I believe the damage to the lawn is done and spotty.

Please let me know any suggestions.

Go to Southwest Fertilizer and ask them. They will sell you the right stuff.

Get a bag of the Bayer multi-treatment (includes grubs, ants and so on) and put it down with a spreader. It'll take you about 15 minutes and cost you about $20 a bag.

How do you know it's grubs? August is usually too soon to see grub damage, as they chew up the roots as the grubs get larger during the latter part of the year and migrate down as they increase in size, so they are harder to get to. If the grass pulls up easily without any roots then it may indeed be grubs. A mature grub infestation is really hard to kill using normal grub treatment, as they are more susceptible to pesticides in the larvae stage soon after they hatch in late spring / early summer. Something like this is better designed to spot-treat grub areas.

^^ Good point. Could be a lot of other things besides grubs. Chinch bugs, blight virus, etc. I was told by a lawn guy that chinch bugs multiply when it gets really hot.

Chinch damage is just starting to show-up in our neighborhood. I recognize it after having problems on/off for several years.
