Some of them have silicone padding to prevent damage--if you can find one of them, you're good to go. Otherwise I'd be careful if the desk is a nice piece of hardwood furniture.

I had one like that and it had cork on it so it didn't damage the wood. You can also use felt pads if you're clamping it to wood.

I had a corked (or padded or something) years and years ago... on a laminate desk like the one in your picture. Never damaged the surface really, but the thing kept coming loose and had to retighten all the time. Finally, one day the lamp got bumped after it was really tight and broke the whole desk top.

So to answer your question - no, it won't damage your desk, just the clutzy people around it will! LOL

If the clamp is just hard plastic or metal, yes.

If it is cushioned properly, it should not harm the desk.
