If nothing alive will be in the house, you can use an ozone generator while you are gone. Have it plugged in somewhere very close to the door so that you can unplug it while holding your breath. It gets rid of odors and will also kill any bugs that are in the house.

The Hepa VOC filter did for me.

If you own the house I would get rid of the carpet and install vinyl pergo. It holds up really well with pets and so easy to keep clean.

Its a tool , and part of the whole picture. Vacuuming, using baking soda in carpet, washing linen etc etc. Anything and everything that can be used helps.
For me, the purifier will run when on travel, and dogs are with Daughter.

Both dogs are washed once a week, vacuum every 2 to 3 days, and wash pet linen on couch and beds..
Still has smell, which I assume is just in carpet, couch and bed.
I dont want febreeze or anything perfumes, just something that gets rid of the smell/odors.
Get rid of the source.

It won't.

If it's that nasty, you need to replace it.

The smell isn't in the air - it's in the fabrics. Nothing will remove the smell that you notice in the air. Clean the fabrics, replace the fabrics. But as long as you have pets you will have pet smells if you have fabrics.

When our last pet died we replaced the couch she always used, and bought new area rugs. We had the expensive oriental rug professionally cleaned.

I had good success with HEPA air purifiers for reducing pet odors. They can run continuously and handle both particulates and odors well.

Carpet, upholstery and drapery steam cleaning might help. Air ducts cleaning and charcoal filters.
You might want to get black light AKA UV 365–368nm flashlight to check on all fabrics to determine if there are stains to remove. They are usually pretty invisible to naked eyes.

If the filter doesn't work then yes.

I prefer bare floors with the exception of area rugs. they are easily replaceable and not heavy to have put down with the sofa on the edge to help hold in place and a coffee table if you want one.
