We are getting drywall installed and there is dust on the door rug. Is this a big deal? Is it toxic or is the quantity too small?

Drywall dust typically consists of gypsum and silica. In LARGE quantities (like an installer who sands drywall day in day out for years) it could be a problem if they don't use the proper PPE, but for a homeowner who gets exposed to dust for a couple of days, no. Drywall dust can be very fine. Borrow or rent a quality shop vac with a new dust filter. It will probably do a better job getting rid of it than some run-of-the-mill handheld Dustbuster or lower power stick vac.

Yup, that dust is very fine. Like talc. It can go straight thru a low quality filter. I'd wear a NOISH air filter when disturbing this. Even for a minute.

Take it outside and bang it out.

If they're having drywall installed and the only thing that needs cleaning is the door mat, that says to me the drywall guys have largely already cleaned up... which almost certainly spread more dust around than vacuuming that tiny rug. Just walking around outside is probably more dangerous.

Even after drying, drywall mud on a carpet can be easily cleaned up, it dissolves with warm water. Don't ask me how I know, or tell my wife.
