I can do minor electrical, but nothing to do with the panel. Minor plumbing is ok, but not soldering. Simple drywall repair, but not major taping and mudding or hanging. Never done tile, or countertops, or roofing, or framing, or concrete.
Agree about roof/chimney. It doesn't have anything to do with the roof/chimney, just getting there. Ladders and I had a major falling out years ago. I prefer not to revisit the relationship
After almost 40yrs in the residential construction industry, I can honestly say that I could perform almost every step of said construction. The one that I would never want to do- foundations. I know every part of it, but never had any desire to actually perform it. Of course there are plenty of steps that cannot be performed by a single person- so, I find the “DIY” concept “lacking”.
Today, there are a very limited number of those activities that I will still take on- age/physical ability are knocking at my door. Some of them fall into the category of “are you crazy!” No, the fear factor/physical limitations aren’t there! Electrical, plumbing, getting on roofs doesn’t bother me. Sensible precautions, right tools, and not attempting without someone else around make accomplishing tasks easy.
Several have mentioned electrical- which should be left to licensed people. Along with plumbing, and HVAC. Most other steps may or maynot require a license, but YT doesn’t make you an expert either. There’s no substitution for experience.
Over the years I have seen all kinds of DIY that just makes me SMH- even something as “easy” as painting walls can end up being a total disaster! Not to make light of those that are willing and able to take on projects, but if you’re not willing to take the proper steps, and time to do it right- you’re most likely actually costing yourself MORE money than that you think you're saving.
I can do minor electrical and plumbing, like changing out a light fixture or faucet. Painting I'm fine with doing, though the bigger jobs are getting to the point where it's better for me to hire someone. Much as I want to deny it, eventually the body isn't able to do what it once did. The work takes longer than it used to, and it takes my body longer to recover afterward. I'm at the point now that I avoid anything that requires moving lots of material, weight, or bulky items.
