Mostly because I just like carpet. I'd rather live for the next twenty years with something I really like than settle for something I'm lukewarm about. Over the past 53 years, we've really learned to compromise and this is just one more time of doing so.

Besides, my husband is 81 and I'm 75. While we definitely don't have one foot in the grave, the carpet and probably the laminate will outlive us. We've done a lot to the house and have a gorgeous yard. By the time we die and the kids sell the house, I can't imagine that having carpet in the living room and bedroom instead of laminate is going to significantly reduce the amount they can get out of the home.

life is too short, why have something you don't really like in your home, whether it lasts a week or a lifetime.
just something to think about.


rip it out and put a laminate in that you do like.....(if you can financially, of course)

My hubby's aunt told me that years ago. I wish I had listened at the time. You spend so much time in your house. It should be the way you want it to be.

yes, it should be, since you are living there and spending so much time there.


Seems people are always in the "putting house up for sale mode" all the time.
OK, so when exactly does one move into a home that one is gong to stay in,
thus making it the way you want without always having "re-sale" in the background.....that would mean never.



personally, I do what I want, don't care about re-sale, a house will get sold, there is a buyer for everything, and most times it is the location that sells the house, not having a microwave over the stove, or something as trivial as a paint color...


I am always for the "get what YOU want to look at" JMO

I've never understood the folks who renovate their house to sell. I suppose it's for the extra worth and they hope to get a return on the investment, but gosh, why not do it while you can enjoy it for yourself?

Because you never know when a job is going to end and you have to sell quickly due to lack of work OR a move to a new place for work (or, say, medical reasons/costs). While there may be a buyer for any home if you wait long enough, often times, you don't want to/can't wait too long. I mean yeah, if you KNOW you're never going to move, make it as eclectic as you want. But a lot of us don't know that for a fact. Since a house is supposed to last, you really are a caretaker for future buyers, even if you own it outright.


I recently remodeled my kitchen and mudroom and have done a bit of painting in other rooms. I've lived in the house for 22 years and finally had the money to do the upgrades like I wanted them for a long time. BUT, I did have an eye on resale as well, as in a year or two I want to retire and move near my grandkids. And I know the upgrades I've done will not only increase the value of the house more than I put in, but it will make sure it sells quicker when it does get sold. The kitchen was a sticking point when we tried to sell back in 2013. People liked the house and location, but they always commented on how dark and cramped the kitchen felt. And no offers came in. So yeah, I'm mindful of that, even when making it the way I like it.
