Even the LA Times article basically stated that masks, water/dust control, and ventilation weren't often used although available. You can lead a horse to water...

What gets me is that there is no problem as long as simple breathing safety measures are involved during cutting. How hard is that? Not very. A simple respirator will work while processing, and special rooms for doing the work.

The problem was that small outfits didn’t do this, understandably because it would have cost them too much. And OSHA (occupational safety and health administration) probably didn’t check them enough or at all. So unfortunately some individuals suffered.

So in the future it could be safely available but yeah, it might cost a little more.

Yes, like commercial stonecutters have been required to do for at least 40 years now.
