Help.. We demo'd the family room and bathroom thats in that room. I'm supposed to go pick out tiles for the family room and the bathroom today. I originally figured I'd take the 18inch tiles and just continue right into the bathroom with them, but I don't know if that's gonna look good. The bathroom is 3x5. I don't know what to get for that bathroom. You can see it from the family room if the door is open. Do I get similar smaller tiles and use a saddle.. Can I use the 18inch tiles and maybe a small border around the edges? Any suggestions or opinions are greatly appreciated. Pictures would be great too if you've got any.

I eagerly await your responses.. seriously..

thanks, Laurie

18in tiles are huge, use 12x12 or 13x13 for floor tiles. If you want to change things use 6in tiles in the bathroom

This might help you with your decision:

I personally prefer the 18x18 diagonal look.

I'll post pictures of each type of tile in a small bathroom for you.

Both of those baths are not 12x12.

The first picture is 18" tile or bigger. You know how I can tell? There are only 4 tiles from floor to ceiling.

There's no way the ceiling is only 4' high in that first bathroom. Actually, that tile is bigger than 18" because the ceiling has to be more than 6' high.

18" might look too big FOR YOU, but large tile with very small grout lines is what's the trend now.

I also just noticed that my first two 12x12 example pictures aren't 12x12 tiles but are 18x18 instead. (They just looked smaller because the picture is taken in a distance, but there is only one large tile in front of the doorway (a 12x12 tile bath would have about 3 tiles in a doorway) and three and a half tiles in front of the bathtub.)

The only 12x12 examples posted in this thread is your last picture and my last picture.

Hopes: Those are 12 x 12 tiles. The first two pictures are a shower, not a bath, and are sideways. The third picture is a different bath taken correctly.

Also Hopes: the last three pictures you posted are 12x12 tiles. look at the doorways vs the tile, typical interior doors are 30" your pictures have 2.5 tiles to fill that space with 18in tiles it would only take 1.75 to do it.

I have never said you can't use 18in tile there are just tons of problems I don't like using them. 18in tiles are easier to break, because weaker at the center then a smaller tile (not that the overall design is weaker but you are more likely to break an 18in tile if you drop something heavy on the center of the tile over smaller ones), 18in tiles do not heat uniformly with radiant heat flooring (maybe I just had weird tiles, but from my experience), additionally the transition from 18in tiles to anything smaller is a bigger deal then 12x12s to 12x20s or 6x10s or 6x6, etc. (look on google for examples of what I mean, especially in smaller rooms the difference is very drastic).

Thanks for posting those pictures. They really help a lot. We had originally planned on going with 18in on a diagonal for the family room but that room gets a lot of use and now I"m concerned that the tiles may crack like Rebel said. I still like the diagonal tiles though and will probably do that.

Squirl, I like the look of the wood tiles but they won't work for that room. That room goes into wood flooring... and before anybody yells at me for ripping up the oak hardwood flooring. We had no choice. We must have had a leak from an upstairs bathroom on one end of the room, and on the other end the water was seeping in by the sliding doors because the deck was too high.. and that room was starting to smell. The water had leaked under the floor boards and partway up the sheetrock, so we ripped that all out. Right now we're replacing parts of the subfloor. The joints are ok, thank goodness.

Anyway, back to tile. The bathroom is only 3x5. It's just a toilet and a cabinet sink so I think the 18inch tile would be too much cutting.

Could I go from 18in in the family room to those little tiles that are pictured in the shower picture above? or would that look stupid?

thanks again for your help. I really appreciate your thoughts on this.
