We have PPO insurance so just call whatever specialist we want. No need to be referred
You don't need any referral with concierge as well. The referral is a professional reference to the specialist. You are not obligated to use that specialist, but usually, you get an appointment much faster than a non referral patient. Often times, that referral is to the medical specialist most sought after. Another advantage is even if your specialist is in your insurance plan, they may not be accepting new patients. However, a call from the concierge doctor's office usually gets an appointment. Now, there are different types of "concierge" medicine so it may not be the same across all practices.

They don't own MyChart, but they were the first of my providers that released confidential information to EPIC without my knowledge or consent. Hell, even the chief Pharmacist didn't know how that happened. This was back in 2017. That was the end of my relationship with CVS.

Wow! I don't know what EPIC is. I never said CVS owned MyChart but once they bought Aetna (ARGH, whole 'nother gripe) - it changed and you HAD to accept all these cookies (taking your private info, etc.) so I refuse.

The cookies make the website work. It's inherent to the nature of web pages. Not all cookies are bad. Cookies are one reason the web works as well as it does.
the ins may be ok with that but many drs arent! not where I live.
Guess we are lucky. Both in healthcare for 50 years and surrounded by top notch hospitals and specialists
So if I need an ankle specialist for instance I google the orthopedic group we have used. Find the foot and ankle specialist listed and call that office directly. No need to go to a internist and ask for a referral to an ankle guy
Helps to be a nurse who knows lots of other nurses. When in doubt ask nurse friends if they know of an ankle guy.
Call the office. They ask what coverage we have. Medicare PPO and a supplement. Never been turned down.

EPIC is software used by hospitals, providers and pharmacies. They can use it to order the medications from the wholesaler, to make claims so that your insurance pays for the meds, to track the dispensing info so they know how many refills remain, to get the electronic prescription from the provider.
Historically I have had no problems reaching my doctors, including, in one instance, at 1 in the morning.
I have found that after moving from where I lived for 30 years to another state, that responses can vary.
We are private BCBS PPO.
I use MyChart for my primary, and I have found, that in this state, I have to manage my heath care much more "hands on" here.

Why is it so hard to get in touch w/a doctor that you had seen? (I know it's ins., etc. that limit) but... do they not realize that it makes some less likely to seek medical care? - I blame it on the insurance companies and them just trying to make money for the investors.
I guess we have been lucky with our doctors. Our local primary care physician is great about responding through both the practice portal and on the phone (she even called up one Saturday evening and spent half an hour with my wife on the phone discussing her condition).
The specialists at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville have also been excellent about responding through the portal along with occasionally calling my wife to discuss things.
