I subscribe to Justin Hickox's channel. His audience is mostly middle aged and older and the special problems with that sort of hair. He also does virtual hairstyles when subscribers email him their photos.

In this video, the model is his wife. He recently cut her very long hair in a previous video.

I swear by a product someone recommended on this forum. It's Sexy Hair's Big Root Plus. Big red can at CVS.

I just spray it along my part line as that is where my thinning shows but with blow drying it adds volume all over.

I'll never be without it.

You might want to try Toppik which are fibers you sprinkle that disguises your scalp. My aunt really likes it because she doesn't want to buy a topper or wig.

Just found this product, more natural and cheaper than Toppik

There are many volumizing products: shampoos, conditioners, serums, mousse and texture sprays...

Don't excessively use moisturizers instead look for foams, powdered hair-building fibers, and root-lifting sprays that create the illusion of thicker hair.
The key word is "illusion" as none of them is curing the actual cause.

Toppik sprays some fuzzy particles/fibers on your hair. I bet that stuff is shedding on your clothes and looks bizarre.
You better wear clothes in color of your hair

You spray a fixative or something to keep them in place. My aunt loves the stuff and would have mentioned any fallout. She doesn't wear makeup and is rather indifferent to her appearance. But she is 87 so I doubt anyone else cares. I let her do what she likes.

Justin Hickox seems to give some really useful advice tailored for different hair types. And good call mentioning Toppik - it's definitely a clever temporary option for adding fullness. I'll have to check it out, especially on weekends when I want my hair to look a bit fuller without much effort.

Another good teaching video by Justin Hickox on how to blow dry your hair and why it goes flat. Also how to hide cowlicks.
