I have to throw a chuckle in here. I've owned several M1 Garands. I had one that would pop the hot shell right down the back of my neck. Every time. Gunsmith fixed it for me. But before I got it fixed, I danced a few times.
I have a friend that is left handed and he has purchased several guns that are Lefties. But some of the rifles he paid dearly for. I don't understand why as it should be made just opposite and in todays world it should be fairly common. Years ago they made a gun and you had to live with it, today they should be catering to the shooter and it shouldn't be a significant different in price.
As far as shotguns, as a left handed shooter, I have not had any issues. For a bolt action riffle, it does pose an issue, and you pay a premium for a left handed action.
North Beach was right, if the ejection thing really gets your knickers in a twist, get the Browning, the bottom eject does not interfere with line of sight. Then again, neither does a double barrel or a single shot.

Both the Ithaca Model 37s and the Savage/Stevens 310s have bottom-eject as well.

I've had a few go down the front of my shirt. That's why, when I'm shooting a semi-auto, I never leave my collar button undone...
During WWII, my father had a couple of hot .50 BMG empties go down the back of his neck. (The story of how this happened is rather amusing.) He thought he'd been hit.
Or you could spring for an O/U or S/S shotgun. Although for many uses the stock is either right or left handed. For tactical use, yeah, the downward eject has got to be the way to go, although right now my home defense shotgun is an 870.
Slight aside, if you want an automatic that will put brass down your collar, try a Luger. Ladies wearing a low-cut top really should not shoot a Luger while so dressed. Never mind why I know this for a fact...
Yeah, and kudos all round to Savage for building some really good rifles at a very attractive price point, it's not at all unusual for a Savage to out-shoot a much more expensive rifle in terms of "right out of the box" - that and damn few shooters can shoot well enough to be able to use any more inherent accuracy than the Savage provides, and the patent trigger helps make use of it too.

I bought my two (10FP in .308, 12FV in .223) before the Accu-Trigger came out, so they're both wearing Sharpshooter triggers. Yup, they'll both outshoot me, and I'm not exactly a sleaze.
Oh, and one more comment for the OP: Since the "guy at gunstore has never even heard of lefty guns", I believe you need to find another gun store.
